Courage, Unity, Service: Rwandans in Sweden Mark National Heroes Day
200 Rwandans living in Sweden, joined by Friends of Rwanda, gathered in Gothenburg to mark National Heroes Day — a moment to honour the values of courage, unity, and selfless service that have defined Rwanda's journey as a nation.
The day centred on the concept of Ubutwari — heroism — and its place as a foundation not only of Rwanda's history, but of its ongoing development. Panel discussions explored how national unity and the spirit of service continue to shape the country's path forward, drawing connections between the sacrifices of Rwanda's heroes and the work of building a better future.
Leadership from the Rwanda Community Abroad (RCA) shared reflections on what it means to carry these values in the diaspora — to live out heroic principles far from home, and to remain connected to the responsibilities that come with that legacy.
Young people were at the centre of the day's conversations. Engagements with the youth highlighted their role as the next bearers of Rwanda's heroic values — not as a distant ideal, but as a lived commitment to community, integrity, and progress.
The gathering closed with celebration, cultural expression, and intergenerational dialogue — a reminder that wherever Rwandans are in the world, the responsibility to uphold and pass on the legacy of Rwanda's heroes endures.
